Art teacher writes children's book ‘Life on Earth’
Lee Raela has previously taught art, including in Whanganui, where she taught mainly home school children. She has used her skills, both in art and in communication, to write and illustrate a book for children called ‘Life on Earth.’
It covers the whole process of birth and Lee sees it as “an opportunity for parents/grandparents to discuss this important topic and to provide good answers for children’s natural curiosity about where I came from.” Lee sees the target market as being families in their many forms.
One page has the clear illustration and the other has the text, which is in rhyming form. At the top of the illustrated page, in smaller print, are explanations of ‘Sciency things.” Lee says, “You can easily ignore these explanations, but they could be useful if reading the book with older children.” She sees the book as appropriate for those as young as three to four years old right through to teenagers. The language is directed at a younger age group, while including some more complex words such ‘trimester’ and ‘ultrasound,’ which again is an opportunity to explain.
At the back, there is a page in te reo Māori and information of where to go for someone who might need support in pregnancy.
