When thirteen-year-old Romy hears angry, raised voices, he finds a wild-eyed young stallion causing a commotion in the local village. Romy makes an impulsive decision, spending his week's wages to rescue the horse from the knacker's yard. But his troubles start as soon as he takes Chance home to Ardwyn Farm. Pa is not happy.
He gives Romy an ultimatum. Upset at his father and unwilling to give up his dream of starting a stud farm, Romy leaves home, taking Chance with him. Gramps and Gran join him at Mr Brown's farm, and together they set up their gypsy wagons in a field by the river.
As the summer unfolds, Romy works with Chance and finds he needs all his determination and courage to overcome the many challenges of training a headstrong colt.
Can he gain Chance's trust? Can they win the Leaping Match and earn the money needed to start Romy's stud farm?
Will Pa change his mind about Chance and let Romy bring him home to Ardwyn Farm?
